Why Does My Hair Get Greasy So Fast? Sebum Balance and How Often to Wash
You washed it in the morning, and by lunchtime the roots are oily again. The role of sebum on the scalp, the truth about washing every day and the right care for oily roots.

Sebum is not the enemy
Sebum is the scalp’s natural oil; it protects the scalp and feeds the microorganisms that live there. When its amount and composition change, the microbiome balance changes too. A study in men found a link between sebum composition and yeast abundance (Suzuki et al., 2021).
Why does it get greasy so fast?
Hormones and genetics set sebum production; men produce more sebum. In women, the menstrual cycle plays a part. Touching your hair often, heavy styling products and stress also contribute.
A harsh shampoo strips oil quickly but leaves the scalp dry and tight; you get a few hours of relief, then the cycle starts again.
Is washing every day harmful?
No. In a controlled study, satisfaction was highest with 5–6 washes a week, and daily washing did not damage the hair shaft (Punyani et al., 2021). What matters is that the shampoo is gentle.
The right care for oily roots
The prebiotic formula removes oil and dirt and helps keep the scalp balanced without drying it out. In a 12-week study with a fermented scalp product, sebum dropped by 20% and scalp moisture increased (Hu et al., 2025). A postbiotic shampoo was also reported to reduce oil secretion (Tsai et al., 2023).
Apply the shampoo to the roots and leave the lather on for a minute; the lather that runs down while rinsing is enough for the ends.
Frequently asked
Oily roots, dry ends: what should I do?
Focus the shampoo on the roots and let the rinsing lather wash the ends. Apply conditioner to the ends only.
Is dry shampoo harmful?
It is fine now and then, but it builds up on the scalp; it does not replace regular washing.
